The United States has reached a diplomatic agreement with Ghana’s Ambassador to the US which will see 7000 Ghanaians deported.
According to Dr. Baffour Adjei-Bawuah, the dispute between the two countries over the nationality of some affected persons has now been resolved.
Addressing journalists on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, he disclosed that American immigration office has every documentation and information that allows the persons to be deported.

“All that we were talking about was for a certain fairness to be applied and the Embassy not necessarily pressured to agree to see some people deported.This is where we had a difference of opinion with the US authorities,”the Ambassador said.
“It’s not a matter of agreeing to deport people without their endorsement but we have had enough discussion for a certain sanity to prevail,” he added.
It will be recalled that Dr. Baffour Adjei-Bawuah had engaged in a standoff with the US government after refusing to sign the deportation forms.
The Ambassador further revealed that the US threatened Ghana with visa restrictions after he refused to append his signature to the deportation.
This was after he admitted earlier in May that it is difficult “to sanction the deportation of my citizens and I have been trying hard to explain this to the authorities.”
