Full video: ‘Sɛx for grades’: Undercover in West African universities

The BBC Africa Eye has finally released its latest documentary on sɛx-for-grades in universities in Ghana and Nigeria.

As earlier reported, the BBC released a trailer of the documentary and it showed that two lecturers at the University of Ghana had been implicated in the video

The two are Dr Paul Kwame Butakor and Professor Ransford Gyampo, who is popular in the media as a political commentator.

Due to his popularity, there has been more interest in Gyampo’s implication and how it all came about.

The full video shows that Gyampo agreed to mentor a young lady named by investigators as Abigail who was presented to him as a student at the university.

After about three meetings in which he read the lady’s scripts and offered advice, Gyampo began making advances and requests deemed as inappropriate.

Gyampo, according to the narrator in the documentary, once requested that Abigail wears high-heeled shoes when coming to his office.

At a point in time, Gyampo requested to visit his mentee at her home but she refused and convinced him for them to meet a shopping mall around.

At the mall, Gyampo is seen and heard asking the lady if she had been violently kissed before which she said no.

Uncomfortable with the direction of their conversation, Gyampo’s mentee asked that they went to buy shoes as the lecturer had earlier requested.

They were seen inside the shoe shop and after the purchase, they came to sit with Gyampo referring to Abigail as his wife among other suggestive expressions.

It is worthy to note that though Prof Gyampo might have acted inappropriately in parts of the video, there was no clear cut case of him offering grades or academic help in return for sɛx from the student.

Menawhile Prof Gyampo has released an official response to the allegations saying he did not engage in sɛx-for-grades as being suggested.

According to Professor Gyampo, he has not involved himself in sɛx-for-grades as the BBC’s video is implying.’

In an eight-point statement, Gyampo pointed out that the video was edited to suit the purposes of those who commissioned it ignoring the contributions of the lady in their encounters.
