Singer-songwriter-guitarist David Crosby died Thursday at the age of 81 after a long illness.

He was the co-founder of the folk-rock supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash along with fellow musicians Stephen Stills and Graham Nash.

Crosby’s family issued a statement, writing: He was lovingly surrounded by his wife and soulmate Jan and son Django. Although he is no longer here with us, his humanity and kind soul will continue to guide and inspire us.”

Crosby had fathered Melissa Etheridge and Julie Cypher’s two children via sperm donation. One of the children, Beckett Cypher, died in 2020.

Who was Beckett Cypher?

Beckett Cypher is the son of Melissa Etheridge and Julie Cypher. He was 21 at the time of his death. In a statement in 2020, Etheridge said that her son’s death was related to opioid addiction.

“Today I joined the hundreds of thousands of families who have lost loved ones to opioid addiction,” she wrote on Twitter at the time. “My son Beckett, who was just 21, struggled to overcome his addiction and finally succumbed to it today. He will be missed by those who loved him, his family and friends.

“My heart is broken,” she continued. “I am grateful for those who have reached out with condolences, and I feel their love and sincere grief. We struggle with what else we could have done to save him, and in the end we know he is out of the pain now. I will sing again, soon. It has always healed me.”

Beckett has a sister Bailey who was born in 1997. The children were born to Cypher via artificial insemination. Crosby was named as the biological father in January of 2000, two years after Beckett was born.
