Dominic Barton Wife:
Dominic Barton wife-Ugandan-born Canadian business executive, author, and diplomat, Dominic Barton was born on September 14th, 1962 in Mukono, Uganda.
Barton was born to a father who worked as an Anglican missionary who helped develop a theology college in Uganda and his mother was a nurse. It is unclear to us at to whether he has any siblings.

Barton graduated with a Bachelor of Economics from the University of British Columbia. He obtained a Rhodes Scholarship and attended Oxford University’s Brasenose College, where he earned an MPhil in Economics.

Following graduation, Barton spent a short time in London working as a currency analyst for N M Rothschild & Sons. He began working as a management consultant from McKinsey & Company’s Toronto office in 1986, where he remained for eleven years.
From 2009 to 2018, Barton held the position of Global Managing Director, which he was voted to. After leaving this post, Barton took on a wider range of advisory and philanthropic jobs and spent a year as Global Managing Director Emeritus.
Barton relocated to the McKinsey office in Seoul in 1997, eventually rising to the position of national practice leader. McKinsey collaborated with the South Korean government to overhaul the nation’s financial system during Barton’s time there in order to promote a ‘creative economy’.
From 2004 to 2009, he served as Chairman for McKinsey in Asia, based in Shanghai. He co-authored China Vignettes – An Inside Look At China, a book that offered insights into common Chinese people and their way of life.
Under the leadership of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Barton served on the Canadian Advisory Committee on the Public Service. Barton was one of a number of prominent business figures in Canada who counseled the prime minister on the modernization and expansion of the public sector of the nation.
Beginning in 2017, Barton presided over the Advisory Council on Economic Growth, a prestigious committee of the Canadian federal government. The council made 13 suggestions, some of which included founding the Canada Infrastructure Bank, starting a reskilling initiative for Canadian workers, developing growth plans for underdeveloped industries including agriculture, and establishing the Invest in Canada hub.
He was chosen by 400 senior partners to serve as McKinsey & Company’s global managing director in July 2009. In order to serve the maximum three terms as the president of the international company, he was elected to a second three-year term in 2012 and a third term in 2015. In 2018, Kevin Sneader took his place.
Barton was appointed the University of Waterloo’s 11th chancellor on June 19, 2018. On February 25, 2021, Barton was reappointed to his position as chancellor.
He has previously held positions on the Cabinet of the University of Toronto Psychiatry Campaign and as Co-Chair of the Max Bell School of Public Policy Advisory Board at McGill University.
Barton was chosen by the Canadian government to serve as ambassador to China on September 4. A mixed response to the nomination resulted, with some questioning Barton’s past associations with China while others maintained that Barton’s background as an Asian and Chinese person made him a particularly suited candidate.
Following his appointment, Barton oversaw Canada’s efforts to secure the release of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, two Canadians who were detained in China in December 2018 in what was largely regarded as revenge for the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou.
According to the Toronto Star, Barton worked on this case before he was appointed ambassador because of his connections and knowledge of the key players, which paved the door for open channels of communication between Chinese, Canadian, and American officials.
This included discussions in Washington in April 2021 where senior U.S. officials promised Barton they would intensify pressure on Beijing.
After being freed from Chinese prison on September 24, 2021, Kovrig and Spavor flew with Barton to Anchorage, Calgary, and Toronto.
China Vignettes: An Inside Look At China was written by Barton. Barton oversaw a study team that interviewed regular Chinese individuals, and he summarizes his findings in a collection of brief vignettes about everyday life.
Barton has served on numerous boards, including the International Advisory Council of the Singapore Economic Development Board and the Asian Development Bank.
It was reported in December 2021 that Barton would take over as chairman of Rio Tinto in May 2022. In April 2022, he will be a member of the company’s board.
Leapfrog Investments, a private investment company that invests in high-growth, emerging countries with an emphasis on social and environmental impact, hired Barton as Chairman of the Management Board in April 2022.
The Eurasia Group, a worldwide political risk consulting company, announced in October 2022 that Barton would be joining the organization as a Strategic Counselor. Barton was appointed for his significant corporate and diplomatic experience, according to Eurasia Group.
