Adnan Masud Syed was born on May 21, 1980, in Baltimore, Maryland, to immigrant parents from Pakistan. Adnan grew up in the United States and attended Woodlawn High School, where he met Hae Min Lee.
Hae Min Lee was a popular senior at Woodlawn High School, where she was known for her intelligence and bubbly personality. Adnan and Hae began dating in the fall of 1998 but broke up in December of that year.
On January 13, 1999, Hae was reported missing. Her body was discovered in a shallow grave in Leakin Park in Baltimore a few weeks later. She had been strangled to death.
Adnan was arrested and charged with Hae’s murder based on the testimony of a classmate, Jay Wilds. Wilds claimed that Adnan had confessed to the murder and that he had helped bury Hae’s body. Wilds also claimed to have helped Adnan dispose of the murder weapon.
Adnan maintained his innocence throughout the trial, but the prosecution was able to convince the jury that he had committed the murder. He was sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years.

Has Adnan Syed’s Conviction Been Reinstated?
After conducting an investigation into Adnan Syed’s case, prosecutors from Baltimore determined that newly discovered evidence undermined Syed’s conviction. On September 15, 2022, they filed a motion to vacate his conviction, citing violations of the Brady Rule by prosecutors who worked on the case several decades ago. Four days later, Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn granted the motion, and Syed was released from prison on the same day.
However, on October 11, prosecutors filed nolle prosequi with the court, stating their intention to drop all charges against Syed. This development suggested that Syed would remain a free man, but unfortunately, the situation took a turn on March 28, 2023.
An appellate court reinstated Syed’s conviction on this date, stating that Judge Phinn had violated the rights of Hae Min Lee’s brother by not providing him with sufficient notice of the hearing. This decision overturned Judge Phinn’s earlier ruling and returned Adnan Syed’s conviction to its original state. The ruling came as a disappointment to many who had hoped that Syed’s release from prison would mark the end of his long legal battle.
