Barbara Lee on Tuesday declared her candidature for the US Senate in that state.
“Today I am proud to announce my candidacy for U.S. Senate. I’ve never backed down from doing what’s right. And I never will. Californians deserve a strong, progressive leader who has delivered real change,” she said in a tweet announcing her campaign.

Lee, who is running for a seat in a hotly disputed campaign, is the highest-ranking Black woman in the House Democratic leadership.
Who are Tony Lee and Craig Lee?
She wed Clyde Oden Jr. in 2020, three years ago, when she was 73 years old. Throughout the course of his extensive, bright career, Oden Jr. has held leadership positions in a healthcare organization, served as a pastor, and obtained as many as six degrees.
Barbara Lee is married to Clyde Oden Jr. for the second time. Her first marriage, which she entered at age 20, ended in divorce. According to KTVU, she raised her two boys, Tony Lee and Craig Lee, alone. The elder of the two, Tony, has experience as a filmmaker. Even Mike Tyson was a client of his once.
Lee’s sons both currently hold positions in the insurance sector. Craig Lee is a senior executive at State Farm, and Tony Lee is the CEO of the African-American-owned insurance brokerage and consulting company Dickerson Employee Benefits.
In a video about her Senate leadership that was shared on Twitter, Lee ran down some of the personal and professional struggles she has faced, including her fight to become the first Black cheerleader at her school, her support for victims of domestic violence, and her role as the only member of Congress to vote against authorizing the use of military force in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
