Betty Boothroyd – Former Commons speaker Betty Boothroyd dies aged 93

Tributes have been paid to former Commons speaker Betty Boothroyd today who has died at 93.

Betty Boothroyd became the first woman to be elected speaker in the more than 700-year history of the role in April 1992, staying on until October 2000.

She later entered the Lords as a crossbench peer in January 2001 until her death on Sunday.

Maxine Peake, who played the former Tiller Girl-turned politician on stage in the 2022 show Betty! A Sort of Musical, described her as “an astonishing woman.”

“So, so sad to hear the news of Betty Boothroyd’s passing,” Ms Peake tweeted, sharing a photo of the cast of her show alongside Lady Boothroyd. “She was so generous and gracious with everyone. What a raconteur she was! One of a kind. Go well Betty.”

Sir Chris Bryant, Labour MP and chairman of the committees on standards and privileges, described Lady Boothroyd as “stern but winsome.”

He said: “She cared about doing things properly and loved mentoring newbies.

“She was a parliamentary star without ever being pompous.”

Deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner called her “formidable, groundbreaking and an inspiration to so many.”
