Early Life

Kacey Musgraves was born on August 21, 1988 in Golden, Texas to artist Karen and printing-business owner Craig. She has a younger sister named Kelly who’s a photographer. Musgraves started songwriting early in her life; at the age of eight, she penned a song for her elementary school graduation entitled “Notice Me.” Later, when she was 12, she began taking guitar lessons from local musician John DeFoore.

Alongside another girl from her school, Alina Tatum, Musgraves performed as part of a children’s country music duo called Texas Two Bits. The duo toured throughout Texas and released an independent album in 2000. When Musgraves was 14, her parents funded her first solo album, a self-release.

After graduating from Mineola High School in 2006, Musgraves moved to Austin, Texas. The next year, she competed on the fifth season of the reality television singing competition program “Nashville Star,” on which she came in seventh place. In 2008, Musgraves was signed to producer Monte Robison’s independent record label Triple Pop. She later recorded acoustic covers of the songs “Apologize” and “See You Again” for the label.

Music Breakthrough

In 2012, Musgraves signed to Mercury Nashville and released her debut solo single, “Merry Go ‘Round.” The song was subsequently included on her major-label debut studio album, “Same Trailer Different Park,” which came out in 2013.

A huge success, the album reached number two on the Billboard 200 and took home Grammy Awards for Best Country Album and Best Country Song. Additionally, it won the Academy of Country Music Award for Album of the Year.
