Sinema’s father, Dan, was a lawyer, just like her. Unfortunately, Krysten’s parents separated when she was a child, and her mother remarried. Krysten’s mother got full custody of the children and moved to DeFuniak Springs, Florida, a small town in the Panhandle.

Krysten’s family faced a rough patch as they tried to make ends meet when she was young. Her stepfather lost his job, and the bank foreclosed their home. The American senator grew up as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She attended high school at Walton High School in DeFuniak Springs when she was 16. She later went to Brigham Young University, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree.

After graduating, Krysten started working with students and families in Arizona who faced the same challenges she did as a child. During this time, she completed a Master of Social Work degree at Arizona State University in 1999. She later earned a J.D. degree from Arizona State University and worked as a criminal defence lawyer.
