CCTV footage of a failed hijacking of a Range Rover outside a complex in Lonehill, Johannesburg, has set tongues wagging on social.

Car hijackings and theft are a frightening reality in South Africa – which is why it’s important to remain vigilant at all times and pay attention while driving.

Data published by vehicle-tracking company Tracker in January shows that most hijackings are reported on Wednesday through to Friday and between the hours of 16h00 and 20h00.

Lonehill car hijacking CCTV footage

Another failed hijacking shocked the Lone Hill community when a CCTV video emerged of a vehicle arriving at a security gate.

The would-be hijackers pulled up in what looks like a white Toyota sedan behind their target, hoping to trap him.

The driver initially tries to reverse into them and push them out of his way, which he eventually achieves.

He escapes despite one of the attackers trying to shoot him, though according to the commentary on the recording, he was “lucky” that the gun in question jammed.

In the clip below, frustration is expressed that the cameras were not able to capture the licence plate on the assailants’ vehicle.
