The quake’s epicentre was reportedly around 12km from Abertilley or 4.9km (three miles) north west of Merthyr Tydfil, at a depth of around 2km – which is considered to be a ‘very shallow’.

Initial estimates suggest it measured between 3.8 and 4.2 on the magnitude scale. However, volcanodiscovery.com says of the Wales earthquake: “Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface.”

Tremors were felt in Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Pontypridd, and Abertillery – and as far away as Wolverhampton in England’s West Midlands.

On social media, people have reported furniture moving and houses and homes creaking. Others reported being woken by the rumbles and shaking.
