Who was Astrud Gilberto?

Born on March 9, 1940, in Salvador, Brazil, Astrud Gilberto was a talented singer.

Her track The Girl From Ipanema became a global sensation in the mid-1960s, selling more than 5million copies across the globe.

Astrud earned a Grammy nomination for the hit and the song won a Grammy for Song of the Year.

Tragically, the song earned her only $120 in session fees, and she was objectified by the press, according to her sons.

Her son João Marcelo told The Independent: “She believed in people and was trusting. They took advantage of her good nature, trust and desire to make music.”

“Brazil turned its back on her,” said Marcelo. “She achieved fame abroad at a time when this was considered treasonous by the press.”

Astrud is widely recognised for taking the bossa nova music style worldwide.
