Jerry Rawlings , born Jeremiah John Rawlings , the June 22, 1947 in Accra (Gold Coast) of a Scottish father and a Ghanaian mother, is a statesman and former President of the Republic of Ghana (1981-2001).

Jerry John Rawlings was born on June 22, 1947 in Accra, on the Gold Coast, a British colony. Her parents are Victoria Agbotui, native, and James Ramsey John, a chemist from Castle Douglas, Scotland.

James Ramsey John was married to someone else in England, with a family living in Newcastle and London. Rawlings attends Achimota School in Accra. He is the only child born to his mother, herself from ethnic groups, the Nzema and Ewe, of low numerical importance.

This lack of an important lineage proved to be a political advantage for Rawlings, as it freed him from family and tribal pressures 1 , 2 . Rawlings marries Nana Konadu Agyeman, whom he meets at Achimota College. They have three daughters 3 .

Former president Jerry John Rawlings is dead

In 1968 he entered the Ghanaian military academy in Teshie. Now flying lieutenant for the Ghanaian Air Force, Jerry Rawlings leads a first attempted coup, the May 15, 1979. His attempt fails.

He is stopped. Three weeks later, freed by other officers, he organized a new coup, the June 4, 1979, which overthrows the regime of Fred Akuffo and brings him to power. The September 24, 1979, he ceded power to a civilian government, led by President Limann.

Dissatisfied with the civil power, which he considers corrupt, he regains control of the country. December 31, 1981 by a new coup that overthrows the Limann regime. He then became the president of the Provisional Council for National Defense.

In 1992, Rawlings resigned from the army, established a multiparty system, and founded the National Democratic Congress. It commits the country to a process of democratization 2 . It does not claim to be either Marxism or capitalism, but, faced with an economic crisis, it applies from 1983 a liberal economic policy, responding to the wishes of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank 2 .

In Ghana in 1989, Rawlings formally spoke out against female genital cutting and other types of harmful traditional practices.

He is elected president on December 7, 1992, and takes office on January 7, 1993. The IV th Republic of Ghana is proclaimed. The December 7, 1996, he was re-elected as President of the Republic of Ghana 6 . He begins his second term on January 7, 1997.

After two terms, the limit provided for by the Ghanaian Constitution 4 , Rawlings endorsed the candidacy of his vice-president, John Atta Mills, for the presidency in 2000, on behalf of his party. But the December 7, 2000, the opposition candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Kufuor, is elected president.

The alternation was peaceful, Rawlings in turn went into the opposition. The December 28, 2008, the candidate of the National Democratic Congress John Atta-Mills is this time elected president, marking a new political alternation. Once again, this alternation is peaceful.

A few weeks ago, he buried his mother. Did the shock win the day? The former president passed away today, November 12, 2020, after a brief illness.

According to state-owned company Daily Graphic, the former president had been admitted to Korle Bu University Hospital for about a week with an undisclosed illness. He was 73 years old.

It will be recalled that Mr. Rawlings recently lost and buried his mother last month.
