COVID-19 explodes among prison inmates in Accra.

Some prisoners in police cells in the Greater Accra region have tested positive for novel coronavirus, the Regional Police Commander disclosed.

DCOP Fred Adu-Anim told journalists that the unannounced number of inmates have since been sent to an isolation centre also in Accra.

“We have tested some of them (policemen) and we are awaiting results,” he told the media during the disinfection, fumigation and general clean up exercise at the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters.

The Police and Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a waste management company have partnered for a major project directed at keeping police facilities clean in this era of COVID 19.

Themed ‘Police-Zoomlion National Disinfection and Fumigation Exercise,’ the exercise was introduced at the National Police Training School, Tesano, Accra, on Wednesday, and would also ensure the cleaning of surroundings of all police training schools (depots), police stations, barracks and their markets, offices, cells among other facilities.

Some 1,249 police stations across the 16 regions and Tema, and six training schools in Accra, Kumasi, Koforidua, Winneba, Ho and Bolga would be part of the beneficiaries of this program.

“Greater Accra Region has 14 divisions and this is one of them.All the divisions are undertaking this exercise but the disinfestation is beginning at just this centre where we have the cells, the striking force etc…but then the other areas will be slated for next week, Sophia Lissah said.

“The project is quite distinctive because aside the officers themselves, you would see that they are all together – the police, the inmates at cells, the family (of the police) they all live together in one community so if one has it, you just imagine the number of people the individual is likely to infect with this novel coronavirus so it is very important that we are embarking on a project like this, we are ensuring the safety of all the people here ,” she added.

Zoomlion Ghana Limited and the police service have partnered for a number of clean-up exercises across the country with overwhelming results.
