Lou Campanelli cause of  Death : Former James Madison men’s basketball coach Lou Campanelli, who ranks among the most influential figures in the history of JMU Athletics, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023 at the age of 84.

Lou Campanelli was born in Elizabeth, N.J. on the 10th of August 1938 and went on to attend Montclair State University for his post-secondary education. As he graduated college, Lou found himself drawn to the world of coaching, wanting to make a difference in student’s lives who were passionate about sports.

His hard work paid off when he became the head coach at James Madison University and later at the University of California at Berkeley. He leaves behind his loving wife Dawn and three children, Brooke, Racelle and Kyle, as a legacy for all that he has done. Lou Campanelli may have taken his last breath but will certainly never be forgotten.

Lou Campanelli, the former men’s basketball coach for JMU, passed away on Tuesday at 84. During his 13 years as head coach of the Dukes, from 1972 until 1985, Campanelli saw tremendous success with a 238-118 record and only 1 season with a losing record. During his time, JMU advanced to the Division II tournament twice and after achieving their goal of being promoted to Division I in 1976-77, they soon made history by earning their first NCAA tournament berth in 1981 when they almost upset No. 3 UVa during that season. Without a doubt this was JMU’s most successful period at the Division I level and it is clear why attending alumni will forever remember Coach Lou Campanelli with gratitude for all his dedication to the program during his tenure.
