Gloria Maria died on the morning of this Thursday, 2/2. The information was confirmed by TV Globo in a note. “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our colleague, journalist Glória Maria”.
Who was Gloria Maria?
One of the great names in journalism, not only on Rede Globo, but on Brazilian TV, Gloria Maria Matta da Silva was born in the neighborhood of Vila Isabel, in the North zone of Rio de Janeiro. Daughter of tailor Cosme Braga da Silva and housewife Edna Alves Matta, she studied in public schools until she reached higher education at the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC-Rio).
In 1970, she began her career at Globo when a friend recommended her to the position of radio listener, the person responsible for finding new news and monitoring the competition, a very important position in newsrooms before the internet. At the same time, she had a job as a telephone operator at Embratel, which she combined with university studies in the Journalism course.

The first reporter to appear live when Jornal Nacional started to be shown in color, in 1977, Gloria accumulated remarkable moments in her career , such as her coverage of the Maldives war (1982), the invasion of the Brazilian embassy in Peru by a terrorist group ( 1996), the Olympic Games in Atlanta (1996) and the World Cup in France (1998) , as he recalled during a chat with Ana Maria Braga , on Mais Você .
Gloria Maria also told a lot of stories around the world, on her travels through more than 160 countries that she met at work , as she revealed in a chat with Serginho Groisman, in 2019. An example, which is already a classic, is the trip to Jamaica, in June 2016, which ended up spawning fun memes that caused her to go viral .

According to Rede Globo, the disease was successfully treated with immunotherapy . The brain metastasis was treated surgically , initially with success.
Last year, Glória Maria began a new phase of treatment, with the aim of combating new brain metastases . The presenter had been away from Globo since December 2022. However, the treatment stopped taking effect in the last few days and she passed away.

WHAT IS BRAIN METASTASIS?

Through blood or lymph, the cancer cell leaves its place of origin – in Glória Maria’s case, the lung – and goes to other organs – in the presenter’s case, the brain .
“Brain metastasis is formed when there is a tumor in the body that releases microscopic fragments that reach the brain through the bloodstream, they are quite common among brain tumors and can derive from tumors in any part of the body”, explains the neurosurgeon Dr. Bruno Burjaili.
Glória Maria discovered the metastasis in the brain after fainting, which according to the doctor, may have been caused by an increase in intracranial pressure, “which may be responsible for momentarily reducing or cutting off the perfusion of blood in the brain, causing syncope (fainting )”, according to the doctor.
