Who was Ian Layboun
Ian was a hard-working journalist with a deep interest in rugby league. His sincere passion for the sport began early on when he wrote for the Batley News, then progressed to the Huddersfield Examiner.
Finally, in 1994 he joined Reuters and occasionally moonlighted as a correspondent as well. Two years later, Ian settled into his role of correspondent and remained so until last November following yesterday’s Rugby League World Cup.
He was praised by many throughout his long career for his dedication to the 13-man code and was sincerely beloved by sports fans who benefited from his expertise and insight. It is no wonder that Ian established himself as one of the most fierce advocates for rugby league during his tenure at Reuters.
Mike Latham said: ‘Ian covered our game for over 40 years with wisdom, integrity, respect, diligence, professionalism and great writing skills. He was a lovely person, colleague and friend. He was highly respected throughout the sport and his passing will be mourned throughout the RL community and much wider. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.’
