Today, a drawing of the late photographer appears in an illustration of a camera as a tribute to Zofia – who is most famous for her black-and-white portraits.

But who was the Polish photographer? And why has the company chosen the 24th April to pay tribute to the late artist?

Here’s everything you need to know about the inspiration behind today’s Google Doodle.

Who was Zofia Nasierowska?

Born in April 1938, Zofia Nasierowska is credited as one of the most important photographers of her generation.

The artist grew up in the small town of Łomianki, on the outskirts of Warsaw in Poland.

Zofia’s father Eugeniusz Nasierowski was also a photographer and reportedly taught her how to use a camera from the age of seven.

In her 2009 biography of Nasierowska, author Zofia Turowska described how the aspiring artist wanted nothing more than to follow in her father’s footsteps.

She said: ‘My father had so much passion that he could teach a chair how to photograph.

‘I didn’t have to go to a puppet theatre, the performance took place in the dark room, where my father would show me different tricks.’

After being featured in her first exhibition at the age of 11, Zofia then went on to attend the Leon Schiller National Film School in Łódź.

Along with Zofia, the university’s other famous alumni include Oscar-winners Roman Polanski, director Andrzej Wajda and Zbigniew Rybczyński.

During her time at the institution, Zofia began using her classmates as models and also met her husband Janusz Majewski – who is an author and director – while she was studying.

Discussing her early subjects, Zofia once reportedly said: ‘I chose girls who like me did not feel like beautiful beings.

‘My first portraits amazed me: Certainly they are beautiful! They just don’t know themselves.’

What is Zofia Nasierowska famous for?

Although she dabbled in landscape photography, Zofia was most recognised for her portraits.

When she was 20 years old, the photographer worked with her first major star – actress Nina Andrycz.

In 1959, Zofia Nasierowska’s career sky-rocketed overnight when her photo of Polish actress Lucyna Winnicka appeared on the front cover of the widely popular monthly TV and film magazine Ekran.

Off the back of this success, Zofia became a household name in the Polish arts scene and went on to photograph her old classmate Roman Polanski.
