American actress and writer, Carrie Fisher was born on October 21st 1956 at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California.

When Fisher’s parents separated in 1959, she was only two years old. Joely Fisher and Tricia Leigh Fisher, her two half-sisters, were born as a result of her father’s third marriage to the actress Connie Stevens.

Her mother wed Harry Karl, the head of a network of shoe businesses, in 1960. Fisher was 17 years old in 1973 when Reynolds and Karl got divorced.

When Fisher was younger, she “hid in books” and became known in her family as “the bookworm.” She read classic literature and wrote poems during her earliest years.

She attended Beverly Hills High School up until the age of 16, when she made her Broadway debut and began singing in her mother’s hit 1973 production of Irene.

Because of the disruption caused by her time on Broadway, Fisher dropped out of high school. Fisher began her 18-month enrollment at the Central School of Speech & Drama in London in 1973.

She was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Special for her one-woman stage production Wishful Drinking.

As a script doctor, Fisher revised the screenplays of other authors for a number of movies, including Hook (1991), Sister Act (1992), The Wedding Singer (1998), and numerous Star Wars movies, among others.
