Brentford and England striker Ivan Toney has been banned from football for eight months.

The 27-year-old will not be able to play for his club or England until January 16, 2024 as a result of his extraordinary ban.

Toney was charged with 232 breaches of the FA’s gambling laws between 2017 and 2021 last November, with the FA adding a further 30 charges that took place between 2017 and 2019 the following month before the were subsequently withdrawn.

Who is Ivan Toney?

Ivan Benjamin Elijah Toney  born 16 March 1996 is an English professional footballer who plays as a striker for Premier League club Brentford and the England national team.

Toney became the youngest player to represent Northampton Town when he made his first-team debut in 2012, and scored 13 goals in 60 matches across all competitions before joining Newcastle United in 2015.

In his first season at Newcastle, he had two successive loan spells with Barnsley, winning the 2015–16 Football League Trophy and the 2016 League One play-offs. He spent the next two years on loan in League One with Shrewsbury Town, Scunthorpe United, and Wigan Athletic.

In 2018, Toney joined Peterborough United permanently for an undisclosed fee, where he was named both League One top scorer and Player of the Season in 2019–20.

He then signed for Brentford, where his record-setting 31 goals scored during the 2020–21 season helped the club earn promotion to the Premier League.

Toney received his first call-up for the England national team in 2022 before making his debut in 2023.

Why is Ivan Toney banned from football?

Ivan Toney has been banned for eight months for breaching football betting rules.

Toney pleaded guilty to many of the 262 gambling charges issued by the FA last year, but denied others.

The ban has now started and includes the summer months so Toney is out until January, 2024.

The suspension also includes England call-ups so he is banned from international football.

An FA statement read:  Toney has been suspended from all football and football-related activity with immediate effect for eight months, which runs up to and including 16 January 2024, fined £50,000 and warned as to his future conduct for breaches of The FA’s Betting Rules.

“The Brentford FC forward was charged with 262 breaches of FA Rule E8 in total between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021. The FA subsequently withdrew 30 of these breaches and he admitted to the remaining 232.”

The FA statement continued: ‘His sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission following a personal hearing. He is permitted to return to training only with his club for the final four months of his suspension starting from 17 September 2023.

‘The independent Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for these sanctions will be published in due course, and The FA will wait to review them before commenting further.’
