James Craig Brown was a Scottish professional football player and manager.
Brown led Scotland to Euro ’96 in England and the 1998 World Cup in France, still the last time the national team graced the global showpiece.

James Craig Brown was born on July 1, 1940 in Glasgow, but brought up with two younger brothers in Troon, Rutherglen and Hamilton, moving with his father’s career as a physical education teacher, later a senior advisor on the subject. He was a keen golfer as well as watching Queen’s Park and Hamilton Academical matches.
Educated at the former Hamilton Academy, Brown played for the school in Scottish schools competitions and in youth international teams, before joining Rangers in 1957, being considered a top prospect.
Brown was manager of Scotland from 1993 to 2001, the longest tenure for a Scotland manager and was undefeated in 50 of his 70 games in charge. Under Brown, Scotland qualified for both UEFA Euro 1996 in England and the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. He has also managed Aberdeen, Motherwell, Preston North End and Clyde.

Brown’s death was announced Monday by Aberdeen, where he was a former manager, director and club ambassador.
“A dear friend to us all, Craig will be sorely missed and our love and condolences are with his family at this terribly sad time,” the club said.
